Burning Issue of Wood Waste
Arden Windows has reduced the environmental impact of its wood waste by investing in a wood burning boiler system with help from the Carbon Trust.
Arden Windows Ltd took the decision earlier this year to significantly reduce its wood waste sent to landfill as the costs of wood waste disposal have become more and more expensive and environmentally problematic.
Instead of using landfill, the solution identified was to dispose of wood waste by transforming it into a fuel. This solution also had the advantage of reducing the overall energy costs of the business. Ranheat Engineering Ltd designed and built the system and helped Arden secure funding from the Carbon Trust.
How does it work?
Wood waste is chipped and stored in a silo then burnt according to the energy needs of the business via a highly efficient wood waste burner/boiler. Heat is both distributed and recovered throughout the 70,000 sq ft facility. For instance, heat is used for the drying processes on the paint and preservation lines.
As far as the planet is concerned, wood burning is considered to be carbon-neutral. This is why a high proportion of wood burning systems are funded by the Carbon Trust. It is worth noting that wood contains no Sulphur or Methane, unlike conventional fuels.
ROI is likely to be as little as three years which makes this type of project a sound commercial investment. The investment also supports Arden Windows' commitment to ISO14001 which should be achieved later this year.
